Gouder Cushion

 110

The GOUDER represents the coming together of artisans in a slum called Shir-abad in the South of Iran and a designer from Lisbon, Portugal. To make this original design, we asked our Baluchi artisan partners to create a reference of all the traditional stitches they know. It started as a piece of fabric and gradually became a sample book of stitches that was passed around within the community. The book was then shared with our designer in Portugal who used it as inspiration for her original design. Crafted by hand on fine imported Italian fabric and finished with a delicate piping, this accessory will be an eye-catcher in any room. Contemporary and refined, yet authentic to its Baluch roots, it takes from the best of both worlds.

Process

We spent nearly two months perfecting the prototype for this design. The challenge was in the math. To make the GOUDER cushion, the embroiderer must count every single weave of the fabric, one by one, mapping out the desired design based on pre-determined spacing. In traditional Baluchi works that fill up the entire space of the fabric, mistakes are harder to spot, but with our original design the empty spaces are part of the charm. One mistake can ruin the whole design. This made it particularly challenging for the first lady who worked on the prototypes. In the end, joyful and proud to have tackled what seemed as an impossible challenge, we will never forget what she said: “I used to be a simple embroiderer, but now I’m an engineer embroiderer.” Those were her exact words and they meant everything.
